Inks for triplex glass

Triplex glass (or safety glass) has very wide scale of applications: glazing of transport facility (cars, trains, airplanes, ships etc.), buildings and production of armored glasses etc. Also a lot of triplex glasses types with special properties are exist like noise reduction glass, heating glass, colored glass, reflecting glass. Such types of triplex glasses are made like “sandwich” with one or several layers of plastic film between sheets of glasses. Special plastic film used for triplex production is made from polyvinyl butyral polymer which provides safe properties for triplex glass. Such glass can be destroyed without large fragments and the impact for destroying it should be much higher in comparison with usual glass sheet.

In general two technology of triplex production exist: so called “film” technology and UV curing technology. In first technique between glass sheets PVB film is placed and then after heating under pressure or vacuum at specific conditions the end product is produced. In second case the gap between two glasses is filled with UV curable polymer which cured by UV light exposure. One another technique which provides the possibility for creating of decorative triplex with image inside used two EVA films with decorative insert. In this case one can produce triplex with infinite color possibilities.

But it should be noted that the film in first technology (film technology) can be colored or even printed and also provide different decorative effect. In this case the technology is much easier than with EVA film. Sun Company is developing new special full color inks for PVB film. The image is printed by ink jet printers directly on PVB film. There are no needs in second polymer film as well as in decorative insert (like in case with EVA). The first samples on PVB film was presented on “Mir stekla 2010” in Moscow. Triplex and PVB film manufacturers were surprised and interested a lot by possibility of printing on PVB film with following triplex production. The key PVB film manufacturers have sent to us samples of film for testing technology. Today the certification of triplex glass from printed PVB film is in process. Also the printer for printing on PVB film was developed.
